Planning your career break or sabbatical is really exciting, but you have to do the boring stuff as well…like finance and budget planning…….

But trust me, it’s easier than it sounds. To start off with, all you have to do is work out what’s coming into the savings pot, budget for outgoings, plus where you can make savings and earn more money.  Once you know how much money you have, you can work out the fun bit of where to spend it.

Below is a list that I’ve put together, but if think of anything else, please leave a comment so others can benefit.

INCOME (Money going into the career break / Sabbatical pot)

Write down all the money you expect to come in each month and at the end of the month see if it matches your expectations.  This could include some of the following:

  • Wages
  • Any other additional work
  • Selling things in your house that you don’t use or need in a car boot sale / ebay etc
  • Renting out a spare room
  • Financial gifts from relatives
  • Selling your car
  • Sponsored events to raise money



Make a list of all your monthly outgoings.  These may include:


  • Car loan
  • Student loan
  • Home loans
  • Credit card repayments
  • HP payments



  • Pension fund
  • ISA’s
  • Other investments



  • Food shopping
  • Lunch
  • Drinks
  • Social



  • Fuel
  • Bus
  • Train


Home Costs

  • Rent
  • Monthly mortgage repayments
  • Costs to make your home more rentable while you’re away e.g. new kitchen doors
  • Increase in mortgage repayments if you change to a by-to-let mortgage
  • ISA’s endowments etc
  • Repairs and maintenance



  • Building insurance
  • Content insurance
  • Landlord insurance if you rent out your home
  • Car insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Travel insurance (we recommend



  • Council tax
  • Car tax
  • Road tax


Services & utilities

  • Gas
  • Electric
  • Water
  • Telephone
  • Broadband
  • TV license
  • Mobile


Business costs

  • Solicitors fees
  • Accountants fees
  • Accounting software fees


Vaccinations & medication

  • Rabbis
  • Malaria tablets
  • Other vaccinations
